If you have format files in <tt>~/Step 2.texmfis currently still necessary, but soon an update of tex-var/web2c/<i>engine</i></tt> where <i>engine</i> is typically <tt>pdfetex</tt>common will run mtxrun --generate automatically when packages have changed (like mktexlsr), then these and there will shadow the ones installed by the context package. So you be no need delete themto run this anymore.
To find them, use <tt>kpsewhich cont-enStep 3.fmt</tt> (and similarly for the other formats). Run the <tt>kpsewhich</tt> from a 'typical' directory (e.g. your home directory), rather than from <tt>~/.texmf-var/web2c/pdfetex/</tt> (adjust for your engine), otherwise it will find the newly created formats before any othersneeds to be done only when you have files in TEXMFHOME or you change things there.
If you You have context installed in a directory that precedes <tt>/usr/share/texmf</tt>, then they will shadow the ones installed by the package, and you will get now a clash (the format files will be the ones installed by the package, but later versions will be read in). So you need to move the shadowing system wide context installations out of the way.-installation!
