Aleph (formerly known as e-Omega), maintained by Giuseppe Bilotta, is a project whose aim is to provide an extension to Knuth's TeX comprising both Omega 1.15 and e-TeX 2.1 features. Its main goals are stability, speed and power. It supports bidirectional typesetting and the usage of large fonts.
(In the future, pdfTeX may integrate those features as well.)
A similar project is XeTeX, but it runs which was originally developed under Mac OS X onlybut is now available for Linux, as well as Windows as an unofficial build.
Manual
# Get rid of the following directories from omega.zip (not really necessary but if you want to be efficient):<br><tt>texmf/eomega<br>texmf/omega/encodings</tt>
# Put files in texmf-local
# Compile the Aleph format: <texcode>mktexlsr<br>texexec --make en -tex=aleph</texcode> or for ConTeXt versions since May 2006, use instead: <texcode>mktexlsr<br>texexec --make en --aleph</texcode># Always start Aleph files with this preamble: '%tex=aleph output=dvipdfmx' or use the commandline <texcode> % tex=texexec --aleph --output=dvipdfmx</texcode>
Now test: texexec the following file (in utf-8).
Study <cmd>def\ArabicUTF</cmd>: it uses raw Omega/Aleph commands, but see also <tt>m-gamma (in the ConTeXt distro) for some higher-level commands
<texcode>
</texcode>
Here's another file:
<texcode>

<!-- at least something is already explained above; should we leave this TODO note? -->
