You can add all the options of <cmd>setupcolumns</cmd> to <cmd>startcommandstartcolumn</cmd>.You can should be able to enforce a new column with <cmd>column</cmd>, but that's a bit broken (at the moment least since 2006). Column balancing fails in "lines" mode (2006-01-14e.g. for poetry).

So, if you want columns and one-column floats and don't have to change the interlinespacing, use Columnsets. If not, you can use Columns with some tricks.
