If you want to use 64-bit binaries, you need to modify the installer (take a look at source code) and setuptex (or just adjust the PATH accordingly) or boot into 64-bit mode. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3773 for instructions. Note that if you switch between 32-bit and 64-bit mode, you'll need to fetch and update the binaries for each platform separately.
