Welcome to the Macintosh! Nowadays it's not a big difference how to use TeX on MacOS or any other Unix.== Introduction ==
==Distributions For getting ConTeXt [[MkIV]] onto a Mac there are basically two routes to take. MacTeX (TeXLive distribution made especially for Mac OSX) and Tools==the ConTeXt Suite (Standalone), recommended for all those that want the most current versions or latest developments in ConTeXt.
Most probably the best way to use ConTeXt on Mac has been [http://ii2.sourceforge.net/tex-index.html gwTeX] via [http://ii2.sourceforge.net i-Installer] so far. HoweverNaturally, it's <b>not supported any more</b> since January 2007 (which means that you cannot post bug reports or feature requests to the author any more)there are other ways, but ConTeXt updates they are still available more for experienced Mac users and it works as expectedthose comfortable with using the command line.
If * The simplest method is to use MacTeX, but as this is essentially TeXLive you will not have an older installation, you should replace the teTeX-based variant with TeXLive-based one:most recent binaries (generally frozen for a year).* uninstall both <i>"gwTeX Support: ConTeXt updater"</i> The advantage is that you get TeX et al, fonts and some nice utilities, including the editor TeXShop (<code>context-update.ii2</code>highly recommended) which can run ConTeXt and <i>"DEPRECATED gwTeX based on teTeX"</i> (<code>texTeX-Variants from within the editor without any knowledge of the command line.ii2</code>)* install <b>"gwTeX based on TeXLive"</b> ConTeXt Suite (<code>texliveStandalone) is recommended for those that wish to have the latest stable version, latest developmental version, or wish to run several versions of ConTeXt side by side.ii2</code>) The downside to the side by side approach is that you need some knowledge of how to use the command line and <i>"ConTeXt updater"</i> againhow to set-up the paths in a Unix environment.
The new version now includes the <code>texmfstart</code> script and installs both pdfTeX and [[XeTeX]] formats automatically.== MacTeX ==
Beyond thisThe easiest way to install ConTeXt on Mac OSX is to use the the MacTeX distribution. MacTeX is a TeXLive distribution modified especially for use on Mac OSX. It will install every thing you need to run ConTeXt, TeX, there may be other tools that interest you:* LaTeX, Xe(La)TeX, along with the editors [http://www.uoregon.edu/~koch/texshop/texshop.html TeXshopTeXShop]and TeXWorks, the TeX Live Utility for managing updates, fonts and many other goodies.  As MacTeX is a simpleTeXLive distribution all binaries are generally frozen for a year. If you wish to have a more current version or the latest beta version of ConTeXt you should consider, elegant TeX editor and PDF vieweralso installing the "ConTeXt Suite" often called "Standalone ConTeXt".* After installing MacTeX all you need to do is set up TeXShop to use ConTeXt, see the [[iTeXMacTeXShop]], a more fully featured, but sometimes more complex, TeX editor and PDF viewerpage. === Installing MacTeX === * [http://www.ingtug.unipiorg/mactex/ Download and follow the instructions from the MacTeX site] (Installer larger than 2GB, instructions for slower internet connections on the site of MacTeX) * You can also [http://tug.itorg/~d9615TeXLive/homepage/texniscopeacquire.html TeXniscopebuy a TeXLive DVD] (if you are a member of a TeX user group you often get it for free). ==Standalone ConTeXt== The new [[LMTX]] distribution is an interestingalso able to run [[MkIV]] files. See [[Installation]] or [[Installing ConTeXt LMTX on MacOS]] for details. == Configuring ConTeXt-Aware Editors on the Mac == Typically, auto-updating PDF- and DVI viewermost editors work out of the box with MacTeX, especially helpful when but if you're updating documents from the command line are using a version earlier than those shipped with MacTeX 2011 (TeXShop 2.42), or otherwise outside of if you would like to use the above-mentioned integrated editor/viewersStandalone distribution (ConTeXt Suite), you need to configure engines for ConTeXt manually* [[TeXShop]]* [[TeXworks]]* [[Texpad]]* [[BBEdit]]* [[TextMate]] == Skim (PDF viewer) ==
==Installation==Unless you are using TeXshop or TeXworks with built-in viewers, the recommended PDF viewer with SyncTeX support and auto-refresh on Mac OS X is [http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/ Skim].
* If you have a broad bandwith internet connection, use [http://ii2.sourceforge.net Gerben Wierda's i-Installer] to install the latest TeXlive tree and (afterwards) the latest ConTeXt beta.* You can also buy a TeXlive DVD.== More Links ==
