<tt>place</tt> is one of:
You get a table of figures with <cmd>showexternalfigures[alternative=a]</cmd>. Alternatives (styles) a, b and c are predefined.
The second brackets of <cmd>placeexternalfigureplacefigure</cmd> can keep any command, e.g. <cmd>getbuffer</cmd>.
