The purpose of a help file is to provide the reader with what they need, and to provide it as clearly as possible. To that end I am removing the 'and this is how you'd do it in *TeX' examples: once we are free to talk about Lua/LuaTeX only, the explanation becomes briefer, more focused, and easier to skim.
