I'm not an expert, but putting Putting the following before <code>\starttext</code> worked for me on Mac OS X: \usemoduleusetypescriptfile[simplefontsosx] \setmainfontusebodyfont[hiraginokakugothicprohiragino-kaku,12pt]

\setscript[nihongo]I got chose "hiragino-kaku" from typescripts with the "hiraginokakugothicprojapanese" by looking at the default font feature in TextEdit, then looking for a similar string in the output of <code>mtxrun --script fonts --list --all type-imp-pattern='*'</code>osx.mkiv.

Japanese typography usually uses underdots for emphasis. The should do itThis is the closest I got: \setupunderbarusemodule[alternative=cruby] % before \starttextbut doesn't .. Oh well, underline is acceptable too. Warning: the above gets you started, but there's a critical omission that makes ConTeXt unusable for real work 日本語の表記では“\ruby{漢字}{. There is no line breaking. The assumption seems to be that you need a space to break a line, whereas Japanese can break between any two characters (although note that punctuation }”やUnderline like 日本語の表記では“\underbar{漢字}”やis supposed to hang outside the right margin)probably acceptable too. Until someone fixes this, there's always Werner Lemberg's CJK LaTeX package :-(
