If you have a look at [[Special:Statistics]], we now have 99 pages! Great! Without all your effort, this would not be the case. Who is going to create the 100th page?

I'm not quite sure life-long is long enough. It seems a term of about 70 years post-mortem with possible extension is the standard these days. ;-)

This is not the place to ask general questions about ConTeXt.  If you have a longer question, the best thing to do with it is create a new page (see [[Help:Editing]] for how to do that) with a description of the problem, and put the special text <code><nowiki>{{howto}}</nowiki></code> in it, which will cause it to be listed on the [[Category:How to]] page.  If you have a short question that is appropriate for the [[FAQ]], you can add it there, and leave the answer blank. If you have a question that you wish to discuss, the best place for that is the [http://www.ntg.nl/mailman/listinfo/ntg-context ConTeXt mailing list] or the "Discussion" page associated with a particularly relevant Wiki page, though you can also use the [[Talk:FAQ|FAQ's "Talk" page]] if there's not an obvious choice.
: Hello, the license of ConTeXt is GPL (GNU General Public Licence). It is stated in mreadme.pdf [[User:Patrick Gundlach|pg]]

:: Actually, it says "in the spirit of the GNU general public license". This made me suspiciuos, since if it were available under GPL, then why not say so plainly. The sentence as written could imply that it's not formally GPL, but it's "in the spirit", i.e. inspired by GPL. Also, I couldn't find the license text in the distribution. Anyway, that's a suggestion for improvement. [[User:BBB|BBB]] 13:55, 7 Nov 2004 (CET)

:::: Well, i can understand the 'spirit' of those gnu licences, but the gory details are beyond me, so that's why i've written down things my way; it permits me to add my own spirit, which boils down to: use it any way you want, as long as you don't mess around with the files in a way that it backfires on me or users.--[[User:Hagen|Hans]] 17:38, 9 Nov 2004 (CET)

Actually, I believe ConTeXt should be under some sort of Artistic License or even the LaTeX license. The GPL is not particularly suited (In fact, I believe that it is not suited for most software that *is* released under it).

The problem: Suppose H.Dumb changes a few core macros in syst-gen.tex and redistributes this new context distro. It turns out that there is a bug in the macros by Dumb that (say) makes TeX fail on documents that contain more that 100 pages. He redirects users to Pragma-ADE for ConTeXt support because he doesnt want to do be bothered with it. Therefore, the support calls will appear on ntg-context, and ConTeXt as a whole gets bad publicity.

Under GPL, there is no way to stop H.Dumb from doing what he is doing. Even worse: the GPL does not even *allow* an additional clause that says that H. Dumb cannot do this sort of thing. The implication is (in my opinion) that you should *not ever* release anything under GPL that you (personally) feel responsible for or are attached to. [[User:Taco|Taco]]

General ConTeXt Questions

This is not the place to ask general questions about ConTeXt. If you have a longer question, the best thing to do with it is create a new page (see Help:Editing for how to do that) with a description of the problem, and put the special text {{howto}} in it, which will cause it to be listed on the page. If you have a short question that is appropriate for the FAQ, you can add it there, and leave the answer blank. If you have a question that you wish to discuss, the best place for that is the ConTeXt mailing list or the "Discussion" page associated with a particularly relevant Wiki page, though you can also use the FAQ's "Talk" page if there's not an obvious choice.

History

  • On July 25, 2020, the NoTitle wiki extension was installed.
  • Since July 1, 2020, this wiki and live.cg.net and source.cg.net are all using ConTeXt version: 2020.06.30 17:30 (LMTX).
  • Since May 28, 2020, we are running on a new mediawiki core, version 1.34.1.
  • The 13th ConTeXt Meeting took place in Bassenge-Boirs, Belgium on September 16–21, 2019.
